Inspiring the Next Generation of Safe Diggers
The Dig Smart Mobile Learning Center is Virginia 811’s first-of-its-kind mobile classroom, created to teach children and young learners why contacting 811 before digging is so important. Through hands-on activities, interactive displays, and engaging demonstrations, the Learning Center brings the hidden world of underground utilities to life—helping students understand how essential services work and how to stay safe.
The Mobile Learning Center travels to schools, community events, STEM programs, and family festivals across the Commonwealth, building awareness and inspiring kids to become safety ambassadors in their homes and communities.

Virginia 811’s Dig Smart Mobile Learning Center is a shared, statewide educational resource offered at no cost to schools, community organizations, and partners. While we strive to accommodate as many requests as possible each year, availability is limited.
Please note:
- We operate with one Mobile Learning Center and a small support team serving events across the Commonwealth.
- Submitting a request does not guarantee availability, date approval, or full-duration multi-day attendance (in some cases, partial attendance may be the only option).
- Our calendar fills quickly—especially during peak school and event seasons—and scheduling priority is based on timing, location, duration, and overall availability.
- Availability may change due to weather, travel logistics, maintenance needs, or unforeseen circumstances.
