April is recognized by underground utility damage prevention stakeholders as National Safe Digging Month. Virginia residents and professional excavators are reminded to always call 811 before they dig. Additionally, in Virginia, we emphasize the CARE message. It outlines the steps that are required by state law when digging, these help keep people safe while protecting the utilities. The CARE message is:
- Call 811 before you dig
- Allow required time for underground utility markings
- Respect the markings
- Excavate carefully
Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell recognizes the importance of safe digging in the state, and to that end, he has issued a proclamation recognizing April as Safe Digging Month in Virginia. 2013 Safe Digging Month Proclamation
